The Power of Feedback: The Human Side of Recruitment
By Tracey Shearer, Director & Global Lead Recruiter at EQ8 Recruit
The Value of Simple Communication
Feedback has become one of the most underestimated parts of recruitment. We talk about technology, AI, and pipelines, yet the simplest thing, a message or an update, often means the most. I’m the first to admit that we’re human. There are times when an update slips through the net because the day gets busy. But at EQ8 Recruit, the intent has always been there. Communication isn’t just a process; it’s part of our culture.
Real Words That Say So Much
In the last two weeks alone, I’ve received over 15 messages from people who simply appreciated being kept informed. These are just a few:-
“Thank you so much for the update. Truly appreciate your consideration for those of us on the seeking end. The silence could be quite nerve-wracking sometimes.”
“Your weekly email communications are music to my ears. The fact I’m still in with a chance is excellent. Thank you for always taking the time to keep me updated.”
“Thank you for your message and for the update regarding the opportunity. While I’m naturally disappointed to hear that it has been closed, I appreciate your transparency and the professional way the process has been handled.”
“Thank you for the update and for your efforts in keeping me informed throughout this process. I truly appreciate your support. I understand that these things can sometimes take longer than expected, and I’m grateful for your continued follow-up to push things forward.”
“Thank you for getting back to me regarding the closure. I truly appreciate the courtesy of receiving an update. It’s a gesture that reflects professionalism and is rare in today’s market.”
The Human Side of Recruitment
None of these messages came after offers or big moments. They came because of communication. Because someone on the other end felt seen, respected, and remembered. Behind every CV, profile, or application is a human being waiting to hear something that acknowledges their time and effort.
One message read, “Many thanks for the update. I really appreciate you giving me the true feedback. You have been very good with that. I appreciate your transparency and thinking from my perspective.” Another said, “Thank you very much for your continued cooperation and for keeping me updated. I truly appreciate it.” It’s hard not to reflect on what this says about the world of work today. Professionalism shouldn’t be exceptional; it should be expected.
Communication Is Connection
EQ8 stands for emotional quotient; the ability to connect, communicate, and understand the people behind every conversation.
There are times when communication is easy, when everything moves smoothly and updates are clear. And there are times when it’s harder, when decisions take longer, or when we’re waiting for clarity ourselves. But honesty goes a long way. A simple note that says, “You’re not forgotten,” can make all the difference.
One person wrote, “The way you manage the process shows your sincerity, love, and passion for the work.” Those words stayed with me. They remind me that it isn’t about perfection. It’s about intent, sincerity, and care.
Culture Over Perfection
Feedback is not a courtesy. It’s culture. It’s what separates process from partnership. I’ve always believed that technology and automation should enhance human connection, not replace it. That’s why communication sits at the heart of how I work. I share updates even when there’s nothing new to report. I give feedback even when it’s uncomfortable. Because trust is built through consistency, not convenience.
The truth is, we don’t always get it right. But we try. And that effort matters. Because communication is what keeps this industry human.
